This is the oldest book in the whole collection — 1878 — and it has outlived several of its own owners.

Henry James's first-edition study of French letters — Musset, Gautier, Chateaubriand, Balzac, Sand, and others — was published by Macmillan in 1878. A former owner, Sandra Wool of London, left her name inside.
